Description

A hand-crafted 4/4 violin by luthier Bill Cunningham of West Lafayette, Ohio. The instrument features a two-piece spruce top with a fine, even grain and a two-piece back, ribs, and neck constructed from highly flamed maple with a prominent horizontal tiger-stripe figure. The varnish is a light golden-amber oil-based finish. Ebony is used for the fingerboard, tuning pegs, tailpiece, and chin rest. The tailpiece is fitted with four integrated fine tuners. The bridge is stamped AUBERT A MIRECOURT. An internal printed label reads Bill Cunningham / 21990 Pickwick St. / West Lafayette Ohio 43845 with handwritten notations in black ink reading 2- 86 and #52. The instrument is accompanied by two wooden bows with ebony frogs, mother-of-pearl eyes, and slides. The lot includes a shaped black hard-shell case with a green velvet-lined interior. Accessories contained within the case include a block of Famous Resitone rosin, a packet of RAO violin strings, a spare bridge part, and a case key.

Lower bout width: 8.25 inches. Pickup is Friday, July 31, from Noon to 7 pm at our facility in Lancaster, OH. Alternate pickup day is available by appointment for a $5 fee per lot or we will provide in-house shipping for this item. Condition report:

The violin appears to be in very good overall condition with no visible cracks, open seams, or previous repairs. The varnish shows minor surface wear consistent with age and use. Both bows are in poor condition regarding the hair, showing significant fraying and loss, and will require professional rehairing. The case is structurally sound with typical exterior scuffing and minor wear to the velvet lining.
