Description
This is a British Pattern 1827 Rifle Officer sword, a design utilized by rifle regiments such as the King Royal Rifle Corps and the Rifle Brigade. The sword features a steel Gothic style guard with a pierced foliate design, incorporating a circular medallion with a crowned stringed bugle, the emblem of British rifle units. The grip is covered in gray ray skin and bound with triple-strand silver-tone wire. The hilt includes a stepped pommel and a backpiece with a checkered thumb rest. A braided leather field service sword knot is attached to the guard. The slightly curved, single-edged blade has a single fuller and is etched with foliate scrolls. The ricasso is etched with the mark for Robert Mole and Sons, Makers, Birmingham. The reverse ricasso features a brass PROVED proof plug inset within an etched six-pointed star. The sword is accompanied by a brown leather Sam Browne pattern field service scabbard with steel throat and chape fittings.
Overall length: Approximately 38 inches. Pickup is Friday, July 31, from Noon to 7 pm at our facility in Lancaster, OH. Alternate pickup day is available by appointment for a $5 fee per lot or we will provide in-house shipping for this item. Condition report:
The blade exhibits significant age-related wear, including areas of heavy pitting, oxidation, and surface staining, especially near the tip. Etching remains visible but shows wear in several places. The hilt has a dark patina and surface rust with loss to the original plating. The ray skin grip is largely intact with light soiling, and the wire wrap remains secure. The leather sword knot is dry and displays cracking. The leather scabbard is in poor condition, showing significant flaking, cracking, and loss of the outer finish throughout. The metal throat and chape are heavily oxidized and rusted.
