Description
A British 1897 Pattern Infantry Officer sword dating to the reign of King George V (1910–1936). The sword features a straight, single-edged steel blade with a single fuller. The blade is decorated with acid-etched scrolling foliage and the British Royal Arms. A brass circular disc marked PROVED is inset into the ricasso within an etched six-pointed star. The hilt is a nickel-plated steel basket guard with pierced foliate decoration incorporating the royal cypher of King George V (GVR) surmounted by a crown. The inner edge of the guard is turned down toward the blade. The grip is covered in grey shagreen (sharkskin) and bound with twisted silver-tone wire. The steel backstrap is checkered for grip and terminates in a domed pommel. The sword is accompanied by a blackened steel dress scabbard featuring two loose suspension rings and a flared shoe.

Condition report:
The sword is in fair to good condition. The blade exhibits significant age-related oxidation and pitting, most notably toward the tip, though the acid-etched decoration remains largely visible. The hilt shows surface tarnishing and minor oxidation to the nickel plating. The shagreen grip and wire binding are intact with signs of age and handle wear. The scabbard is structurally sound but displays significant surface wear, scratches, and loss to the blackened finish.
