Description
A World War II commemorative ceramic pitcher manufactured by Copeland Spode of England. Produced circa 1941, this cream-colored earthenware jug was designed specifically for the United States market to celebrate the Anglo-American alliance. The body features black transfer-printed imagery and notable quotes from Winston Churchill. The obverse depicts a central oval portrait of Churchill surrounded by symbols of the British military including a tank, a naval destroyer, and a fighter aircraft. Inscriptions include All I can offer is blood toil tears and sweat and Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few. The reverse features a British Bulldog atop a Union Jack and a globe centered on the Atlantic Ocean. Inscriptions include Give us the tools and we will finish the job! and a five-line verse from Longfellows poem The Building of the Ship. The base bears the factory stamp for Copeland Spode, England, and is marked U.S.A. Design and Patent Pending.
