Description
A hand-decorated trench art souvenir fashioned from a French 37mm artillery shell casing. The brass body features repousse and chased decoration consisting of foliate and floral scrolls centered around a Cross of Lorraine. The casing side bears hand-chased script in a decorative cursive style reading Souvenir, Nancy, 1918, and France. The base headstamp includes struck ordnance marks: 37-85 indicating the caliber and Model 1885 Hotchkiss gun, PDPS for the manufacturer Parc d’Artillerie de Paris-Seine, 18 for the 1918 manufacture date, the lot number 341, and a flaming bomb symbol representing the French Ordnance Department. The top rim is flared with an irregular edge from the original hand-working process.
