Description
This original World War I public service poster was issued by the United States Food Administration circa 1918. The artwork, signed in the plate as TOWNSEND at the lower right of the illustration, is attributed to noted American combat artist Harry Everett Townsend (1879-1941). The high-contrast, woodcut-style illustration depicts a group of French civilians, including women and children, huddled near rubble and a wooden cart. The poster served as part of a campaign to encourage domestic food conservation to support Allied forces and civilians in France during the conflict. The printed text includes the main heading WAR RAGES in FRANCE / WE MUST FEED THEM in the center. Supporting text on the left reads They cannot fight & raise food at the same time, while the right side states Denying ourselves only a little means Life to them. The bottom center features the official seal of the United States Food Administration along with the organization name. The identification mark No. 19 is printed in the lower-left corner. The poster is printed in black ink on off-white paper.
