Description
A pair of French World War I trench art vases constructed from repurposed 37mm brass artillery shell casings. Each vase features hand-hammered repousse decoration against a stippled background and a crimped wavy rim. The first vase is decorated with a grapevine motif consisting of leaf and grape clusters, with the word REIMS embossed at the base. The base of this shell is stamped with 37-73 and APX-CT, referring to the Atelier de Construction de Puteaux. The second vase features two blooming roses with leaves and the word Verdun inscribed in script at the base. The base of this shell is stamped with 37-85, a flaming grenade ordnance symbol, and PDPs 196 2 16, identifying the manufacturer as Pinchart-Deniell et fils à Paris with a production date of February 1916.
