Description
A collection of 13 hand-painted wooden unit insignia plaques primarily representing various United States Marine Corps (USMC) divisions and aircraft wings from the World War II through the early Cold War era. These pieces are examples of military barracks art, constructed from hand-cut plywood or solid wood with raised and applied wooden elements. The plaques are hand-painted in red, yellow, blue, and white. Identified units include the 5th Marine Division Spearhead, 52nd Defense Battalion, and the Fleet Marine Force (FMF) which features a black seahorse with carved FMF lettering. Marine Aircraft Wing (MAW) units are represented through several plaques featuring stylized yellow wings, stars, and Roman numerals for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th MAWs. Other notable insignia include the III Amphibious Corps with a yellow dragon and Roman numeral III, and a 3rd MAW variation with a snarling animal head. The 52nd Defense Battalion plaque features the handwritten word Gold and block letters USMC on the raised white t-bar element. Several plaques show small mounting holes.
Measurements: approximately 18 to 20 inches in height and width. We do our best to describe all items in the sale, and we definitely take a ton of photos. But, we are not able to guarantee authenticity or era of items in the sale. Please carefully look at all photos (up to 100 in some cases on our in-house platform) to judge for yourself what you are buying. All sales are final. Our in-house shipping is available. Pickup is Wednesday, July 15, from Noon to 5 pm at our facility in Lancaster, OH. Alternate pickup day is available by appointment for a $5 fee per lot or we will provide in-house shipping for this item.
