July Military Auction
Lot 25245:
Description
This is a United States Model 1904 cavalry rifle scabbard, manufactured by Rock Island Arsenal in 1905. Designed specifically for carrying the M1903 Springfield rifle on a saddle, the scabbard is constructed from heavy brown saddle leather with machine-stitched seams. The piece features its original leather attachment and adjustment straps with steel buckles and brass rivet reinforcements. The throat of the scabbard is deeply stamped with several military identification marks. The uppermost mark is a unit designation reading C 14 14, likely corresponding to Troop C of the 14th Cavalry Regiment, item or rack number 14. Below this is the manufacturer information consisting of arced text for ROCK ISLAND over ARSENAL and the production year 1905. At the base of the marking block is a boxed inspector stamp containing the initials H.E.K., identifying the work of government inspector Henry E. Knight. The leather exhibits a smooth grain on the exterior and a natural sueded texture on the interior.
