Description
This is a United States Army Model 1895 Enlisted Forage Cap, also known as a kepi, dating to the Spanish-American War era. The cap is constructed of dark navy blue wool with a flat circular crown and two black-painted metal ventilation grommets on each side. The front of the cap features a stamped brass insignia of crossed rifles, which served as the official branch insignia for the U.S. Infantry during this period. The insignia includes a numerical 2 positioned above the intersection and a letter D below, identifying the original wearer as a member of Company D, 2nd Infantry Regiment. The cap retains its original black leather chinstrap, which is secured by two brass side buttons featuring the U.S. General Service eagle design. The interior of the crown features a silver-toned manufacturer stamp that reads THE MC LILLEY & CO. COLUMBUS OHIO PATENT APPLIED FOR. The leather sweatband contains a printed paper label bearing the owner name F. ZIMMERMANN. We do our best to describe all items in the sale, and we definitely take a ton of photos.
