Civil War CDV photograph of Colonel George Arrowsmith who as colonel of the 157th New York Volunteers was killed on 7/1/1863 at the battle of Gettysburg. Photo measures 4.125″” x 2.5″. The image has a Slagle Washington, D.C. backmark.  “Arrowsmith” is written in pencil on the back of the image next to the  backmark. Other images of Arrowsmith can be viewed at “Find a Grave” where three other photographs are posted.  On 11/18/1862 he accepted a commission as Lieutenant Colonel in the 157th New York Volunteers. The regiment had been recruited primarily from Madison and Cortland Counties. The 157th was attached to the third Division of the 11th Army Corps at the battle of Chancellorsville and at Gettysburg where Lt. Colonel Arrowsmith was shot in the forehead and killed while leading his regiment in the defense of the Union line north of the town on July 1, 1863.  Pick up is Sunday, March 29 from 10 am to 4 pm at our gallery in Lancaster, Ohio 43130 or we will provide in-house shipping for this item.
