Civil War CDV photograph of Colonel Richard Petit Roberts who as Colonel of the 140th Pennsylvania Infantry was killed On July 2, 1863 at the battle of Gettysburg. Photo measures 3.94″ x 2.44″. No Backmark. Modern pencil notation indicates that this image was identified by Roger Hunt. Mr. Hunt is the author of Brevet Brigadier Generals in Blue and has published 8 volumes in his long running Colonels in Blue series that is a compilation of photographs and information on the officers who rose to the rank of Colonel but were not promoted to the rank of brigadier general or brevet brigadier general. Attached to this lot is photo of Roberts’ from Roger Hunt’s Colonels in Blue; The Mid Atlantic States Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia. Colonel Roberts, a resident of Beaver County, Pennsylvania, was commissioned as Captain of Co. F on 8/21/1862. He was promoted to Colonel on 9/12/1862 and led the regiment at the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg until his death in the Wheatfield at Gettysburg.  Pick up is Sunday, March 29 from 10 am to 4 pm at our gallery in Lancaster, Ohio 43130 or we will provide in-house shipping for this item.
