Description
Ohio Civil War medal made by Tiffany & Company and named to George W. Chessell of Co. K, 15th OVI. He enlisted as a 1st Sergeant on September 23, 1861 and mustered out November 21, 1865. During his term of service the 15th was engaged at the battles of Shiloh, Stones, River, Liberty Gap, Tennessee, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge. During the Atlanta Campaign, the 15th fought at Buzzard.s Roost, New Hope Curhch, Resaca, Dallas, Georgia, Pine Kno, Pine Hill, Pickett’s Mills, Kennesaw mountain, Marietta, Vining, Atlanta, and Lovejoy Station. In December of 1864 they fought at the Battle of Nashville. By the end of the war, the 15th had suffered casualties of 7 officers and 172 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded.
