Lot 25968:
Description
This is an original World War II domestic propaganda poster, circa 1944, issued by the Office of Price Administration to promote government price controls and combat inflation. The poster is illustrated by Leon Helguera and features his signature, L.H. Helguera, in the plate at the bottom right of the central image. The graphic composition depicts Uncle Sam pointing toward a yellow line graph representing the cost of living during This War (World War II), which is shown to be significantly lower than the red line graph for the Last War (World War I). A small circular emblem at the bottom right features a woman’s portrait, symbolizing the role of American housewives in monitoring household expenses. The text at the top left reads COST OF LIVING IN TWO WARS. Labels for the graph lines are LAST WAR in red and THIS WAR in yellow. The lower section includes bold text stating Keep up the good work Keep down living costs and PAY NO MORE THAN CEILING PRICES in red. The poster is printed via offset lithography on paper stock.
