A United States Marine Corps (USMC) M-1955 Fragmentation Protective Body Armor Vest, commonly referred to as a flak jacket, dating from the Vietnam War era. This third-pattern model is constructed of olive drab nylon and features a 3/4-inch high padded collar for neck protection. The vest utilizes a heavy-duty front zipper closure reinforced by a button-down storm flap with metal snaps. Design features include a single utility pocket on the left chest and a row of metal eyelets along the bottom hem for the attachment of M-1910 wire-hook field equipment. An interior cloth label is stitched inside the neck area and reads: IMPORTANT / ARMOR, BODY, FRAGMENTATION PROTECTIVE: UPPER TORSO, / M-1955 (W/COLLAR) / SEVENTY PERCENT of all combat casualties are / caused by fragmentation type weapons. This / vest, including the flexible shoulder pad area / and collar, will afford you considerable protection / from these missiles. However, it will NOT protect / you from ALL small arms fire at close range. / Take care of your vest and wear it wisely. / IT MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE! / U.S. MARINE CORPS / SIZE L. The label includes a handwritten notation M-116. The reverse of the vest is personalized with two names in black ink: MASON across the upper back and HALL in large, hand-drawn block letters below. Faint, illegible stenciled markings are visible on the back. The internal ballistic plates remain present within the vest structure.
