Description

This United States Marine Corps cold weather pile cap dates from the mid-20th century, a pattern utilized during World War II and the Korean War. The headgear is constructed with an olive drab wool or heavy cotton gabardine crown and features a brown synthetic fleece trim on the foldable front flap and earflaps. The earflaps are designed to be worn secured over the crown or fastened under the chin using the attached metal slide buckle and snap closure. Centered on the front flap is a brass USMC Eagle, Globe, and Anchor insignia mounted on a rectangular brass backing plate. The backing plate exhibits an iridescent, multi-colored patina. The interior of the cap is lined with a quilted olive drab fabric for thermal insulation. A small white fabric label is stitched into the interior lining, although the stamped ink markings are faded and illegible.
