Burns March Military Auction
Lot 240:
Description
World War One 1917 French poster by Alphonse Grebel promoting the Paris Fair; a patriotic and economic event intended to stimulate the French economy in the midst of war. The poster features the Greek god Hermes steering a sailboat on the River Seine carrying two female passengers, one representing the city of Paris, the other carrying Hermes’ herald’s staff. At the prow of the boat is the shield of Paris, inscribed with the city’s motto ‘Fluctuat nec Mergitur’ (‘It is beaten by the waves but does not founder’). The boat is laden with goods, including vases, textiles and books. The title of the poster “Foire de Paris” is inscribed on the side of the boat. Printed along the bottom left corner is “VISA _ 5303”. “Le Papier” Paris” is printed along the bottom right. The poster is mounted to a poster board. The poster measures 42.75″ x 29.5″ – .75″. It appears that the left margin of the poster has been slightly trimmed as the bottom of the poster is 29.75″ wide while the top is 29.5″ wide. Fold lines are still visible as the poster was originally folded into 8 sections. There is a small water stain in the bottom left margin that does not affect the content.
