Description
World War One UDC – United Daughters of the Confederacy 1932 Certificate for the first ever award of the Cross of Military Service medal to a female recipient; Judith Gambrell Wiley. The medal was awarded on November 17, 1932. Judith Gambrell Wiley, of Macon, Georgia, served in the US Army as a nurse during World War One. She worked in Paris and also in battlefront hospitals. She was a lineal descendant of Civil War Confederate James Preston Gambrell who served as a 1st Lieutenant in Co. I, 2nd Mississippi Infantry. The certificate measures approx. 8.5″ x 9.25″. This certificate used by the UDC for Wiley’s award was a certificate intended for a male recipient as apparently no blank certificates had been created at the time for female recipients Pick up is Sunday, March 29 from 10 am to 4 pm at our gallery in Lancaster, Ohio 43130 or we will provide in-house shipping for this item.
