Description
Spanish American War document signed by Rear Admiral George Dewey on December 14, 1898 ordering that Lieutenant John H. L. Holcombe be detached from the U.S.S. Raleigh and placed on a transport ship for San Francisco, California in order to seek medical treatment at the U.S. Naval Hospital at Mare Island, California. Also included in this lot is a steel engraving of Admiral Dewey copyrighted 1898 by H.T. See. The document was executed onboard Dewey’s flagship the U.S.S. Olympia at Cavite, Philippine Islands and signed on official stationary of the “United States Naval Force on Asiatic Station”. Dewey’s bold ink signature measures 4″ x 3/4″. The back page of the document is signed by Joseph Bulloch Coghlan, the Captain and Commander of the U.S.S. Raleigh and then also by medical personnel after his arrival at Mare island. The document measures 10.5″ x 8″. The U.S.S. Raleigh is credited with firing the first shot of the Battle of Manila Bay. George Dewey graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1858. During the Civil War he participated in the capture of New Orleans, The siege of Port Hudson, and both the First and Second Battles of Fort Fisher. He attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander by the end of the war. Promoted to the rank of Admiral of the Navy in 1899 he is the only person in U.S. Navy history to hold that rank.
