4.25″ x 3″ card autographed  “Colby Mitchell Chester rear Admiral U.S.N.”  Signed in ink. Chester was the the only Naval officer in the history of the United States Navy to have actively served in the Civil War, Spanish American War, and World War I.  Chester graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1863. During the Civil War he served onboard the USS Richmond in Admiral David Farragut’s squadron and participated in operations against Mobile, Alabama. He was Commandant of Cadets at the U.S. Naval Academy from 1891-1894. He commanded the USS Cincinnati, flagship of the Southern Squadron during the spanish American War and became commanding officer of the USS Kentucky in 1900. In 1902 he became superintendent of the U.S. Naval Observatory. He retired in 1909. He was recalled to special duty in 1917, during World War I. He was recalled to special duty in 1917, during World War I, as the first commandant of the Navy ROTC units at Yale University and Brown University.
