Description
This antique travel trunk, typically identified as a stagecoach or hide trunk, dates to the early 19th century, circa 1800-1840. The trunk is constructed from a rectangular softwood frame, likely pine, which is covered in a dark, heavy leather or animal hide. The exterior is elaborately decorated with brass tacks or studs arranged in geometric borders and rectangular patterns, with a central cartouche design on the lid. Structural reinforcement is provided by brass corner guards. Hardware includes a central rectangular iron lock plate and wrought iron drop handles mounted to heart-shaped backing plates at each end. The interior is lined with a blue and white striped cotton ticking fabric. Two distressed paper labels are affixed to one side; the larger label identifies a connection to Mansfield, Ohio, while the smaller upper label contains fragments of text including “COLU” and “DELAY.”
26.5 inches wide, 13.5 inches deep, 13.5 inches high. Pickup is Friday, July 31, from Noon to 7 pm at our facility in Lancaster, OH. Alternate pickup day is available by appointment for a $5 fee per lot or we will provide in-house shipping for this item. Condition report:
Poor to fair condition. The leather covering exhibits significant degradation, including extreme dryness, heavy crazing, and large areas of loss that expose the wooden frame, particularly along the lid and base. The brass tacks and hardware show heavy oxidation and a dark patina. The interior fabric lining is stained, torn, and partially detached. The paper labels are highly distressed with significant text loss. One side handle shows a historical wire repair.
