July Gallery Auction
Lot 28830:
Description
This Imperial Russian wine coaster is constructed with a wide, 84 zolotnik silver rim and a turned dark wood base. The silver rim is decorated in a Neo-Rococo style with heavily embossed and chased scrolling acanthus leaves, C-scrolls, and shell motifs along a scalloped edge. At the center of the coaster is an inset silver disc featuring an engraved interlaced monogram surmounted by a noble coronet. The wooden base is made of a dark, highly figured wood with concentric ring turnings. The silver rim contains several hallmarks: a circular punch with crossed anchors and a scepter for St. Petersburg; a rectangular 84 zolotnik standard mark (equivalent to .875 silver purity); an assay master mark С.Л for Sergey Levins; a maker mark И.Е likely for Ivan Yefimov; and a date mark for 1893. The side of the silver rim is hand-engraved with an inventory or stock number reading № 19. 59 1/2. The underside of the wooden base is finished with a green felt pad.
