Description
This collection consists of three original United States War Department basic field manuals and two chemical warfare instructional aids dating from 1940 to 1944. The grouping includes one copy of FM 23-35, Basic Field Manual, Automatic Pistol Caliber .45 M1911 and M1911A1, published in 1940, and two copies of FM 21-40, Basic Field Manual, Defense Against Chemical Attack, dated September 7, 1942.
Two of the manuals are inscribed with the handwritten signature of Sgt. Leonard on the front covers. One copy of FM 21-40 features a circular purple ink receiving stamp dated January 25, 1943, from the W.D.C. M.P. Trng. Bn. (Western Defense Command, Military Police Training Battalion). The manuals contain technical instructions, photographic plates showing gas mask fitting (M4 mask), and diagrams for marksmanship targets.
The accompanying ephemera includes a double-sided, color-coded folding identification card titled Possible Enemy Chemical Warfare Agents, dated January 4, 1944, which outlines detection and first aid for blister, choking, and nerve gases. Also included is a single-sided instruction card titled REMEMBER! DECONTAMINATION, printed in 1943, providing procedures for gas mask use and the preparation of decontamination mixtures. All items were produced by the United States Government Printing Office. We do our best to describe all items in the sale, and we definitely take a ton of photos. But, we are not able to guarantee authenticity or era of items in the sale.
