This lot consists of a World War I-era military manual and related personal ephemera belonging to Sergeant Joe T. Lovett of the American Expeditionary Forces. The primary item is a hardback volume titled Manual for Noncommissioned Officers and Privates of Infantry of the Army of the United States, 1917, published by the Washington Government Printing Office as War Department Document No. 574. The manual features various instructional plates and text, including diagrams for target practice with the M1911 pistol and rifle, bayonet drill maneuvers with dummies, and a layout for infantry shelter tents and equipment (Plate VI). The interior flyleaf contains a handwritten inscription in ink: Property of Sgt. Joe T. Lovett 19th Co. 4th M.M. Regt. D.M.A. American E.F. St. Jean de Monts (Vendee) September 4, 1918.

Included in the group are several pieces of troop transport and field ephemera. A ship’s berth and abandon ship card is filled out in pencil with Berth No. 242, Compartment No. F3, and eating station E8, with specific instructions for falling in at the port side forward well deck. A gas mask instruction kit consists of a yellow paper envelope labeled This Envelope Contains Instructions, Record Card, Tape for Repairs and an internal card titled Correct Use of Gas Mask Equipment detailing donning and maintenance procedures. Also present is a small mess card featuring a grid for tracking daily meals (Breakfast, Dinner, Supper) with its original attachment twine. We do our best to describe all items in the sale, and we definitely take a ton of photos. But, we are not able to guarantee authenticity or era of items in the sale. Alternate pickup day is available by appointment for a $5 fee per lot or we will provide in-house shipping for this item.
