Description

A late 19th-century commemorative silver-plated souvenir spoon manufactured by the Homan Manufacturing Company (Homan and Mussmann) of Cincinnati, Ohio. The piece was produced for the 32nd National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), which was held in Cincinnati from September 5th to 10th, 1898. The interior of the bowl is embossed with the text 32ND NATIONAL ENCAMPMENT, SEP 5 TO 10 1898, and CINCINNATI-O. centered around a stylized GAR monogram. The front of the handle features the embossed lyric SHOULD AULD ACQUAINTANCE BE FORGOT and patriotic symbols including the GAR monogram, a five-pointed membership star, and a United States flag with crossed rifles. The reverse of the handle terminal features a medallion embossed with the sentiment WE DRANK TOGETHER FROM THE SAME CANTEEN. The reverse of the stem is stamped with the characters H & M MFG CO. A1. The A1 mark indicates a high grade of silver plating. We do our best to describe all items in the sale, and we definitely take a ton of photos.
