Description

This is a collection of ten hand-painted wooden unit insignia plaques representing various commands within the United States Marine Corps, executed in the style of World War II era heraldry. The collection consists of various diamond, shield, and rectangular plaques constructed from plywood with applied wooden relief elements to create a three-dimensional effect. The group includes five diamond-shaped plaques for Marine Aircraft Wings (MAW), featuring the winged Eagle, Globe, and Anchor insignia for the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing (I), 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing (II), 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (III), 4th Marine Aircraft Wing (IV), and Marine Wings Pacific (PAC). A blue diamond-shaped plaque represents the 1st Marine Division, featuring the Southern Cross constellation and a red numeral 1 with the text GUADALCANAL. The III Amphibious Corps is represented by a red diamond-shaped plaque featuring a yellow seahorse entwined with a blue anchor. One shield-shaped plaque features a winged globe and anchor variant alongside a green three-leaf clover, likely associated with a unit of the 4th Marine Division. A rectangular black plaque features a white polar bear on an ice floe, a design historically associated with the 6th Marine Division and the China Marines. The final piece is a shield-shaped plaque featuring a white winged sword with stylized black characters appearing as OO and L. No manufacturer marks are visible, suggesting these were locally fabricated commemorative pieces for display in a mess hall or headquarters.
