July Military Auction
Lot 25234:
Description
This is a World War II era US Army or US Army Air Forces officer service cap, often referred to as a crush cap due to its soft, pliable construction favored by flight crews. This specific example was manufactured in India for personnel serving in the China-Burma-India (CBI) Theater of Operations. The cap is constructed of khaki cotton twill fabric and features a hand-embroidered bullion wire insignia of the Great Seal of the United States on the front. It is equipped with a brown leather visor and a matching leather chinstrap secured by two brass buttons embossed with the US Army eagle.
The interior crown retains a diamond-shaped manufacturer label protected under a clear cover. The label features a royal crest and is inscribed: BY APPOINTMENT TO THE LATE KING GEORGE V, RANKEN & CO., LTD. around a central sunburst star logo. It lists locations in CALCUTTA-SIMLA-New Delhi, LAHORE-RAWALPINDI and MURREE, and notes the firm was ESTABLISHED IN CALCUTTA 1770. Faint, illegible ink markings are visible on the tan interior lining fabric. We do our best to describe all items in the sale, and we definitely take a ton of photos.
