Description
This is a complete, factory-sealed shipping crate containing United States military Meal, Combat, Individual (MCI) rations, which were the standard field rations from the late 1950s until the early 1980s. This particular case dates to the very end of the MCI production era before the full transition to the MRE. The case was manufactured by Southern Packaging and Storage Co., Inc. of Mullins, South Carolina. The cardboard exterior features extensive black stenciled markings including MEAL COMBAT IND and a large letter C on the top. Side panel markings include the National Stock Number 8970-00-577-4513, the quantity of 12 MEALS A/A (Assorted), and the contract number DLA 13H-79-C-0974. The front panel indicates Lot No. 146 with a pack date of 9/80 and an inspection/test date of 9/82. A black crescent moon symbol is stenciled on the side. The bottom panel contains a manufacturer’s stamp from Gaylord Boxes (Crown Zellerbach Corp) and confirms the box meets specification PPP-B-636 H with a 650-pound bursting test. An adhesive paper label from the Defense Personnel Support Center (DPSC) is present on the top, detailing storage notices. The crate remains sealed with its original heavy-duty staples and a single plastic tension strap.
