July Military Auction
Lot 24925:
Description
The bulk of this auction, those lots that have the tag “AB346” at the end of the description, comes from the collection of Richard P Mason (1951-2026). From Rich’s daughter: “Richard Mason was a Sgt. E5 in the United States Marine Corps from 1968-1971 and again from 1974-1978. He was an expert rifleman and spent two years in combat in Vietnam. Rich was a member of the Combined Action or “CAP” program, where marines were in units along with the South Vietnamese soldiers. They lived and worked in villages, protecting themselves and civilians from attack. Rich was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Combined Action Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Civil Action Ribbon, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.” Rich can be seen at center in the image attached to this introductory “lot.” This image is not included in the auction, but it is here for reference and you may save it to keep along with anything you buy here. Rich kept many of his Vietnam items, and you will see many items in this sale marked with his name. Following the war, he returned to Newark and joined the City of Newark (Ohio) Police Department, retiring as Detective Sergeant. He was a member of the Licking County Marine Corps League, Veteran of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and Fraternal Order of Police. During his post-war years, Rich was an avid collector of militaria, particularly Marine Corps items, and was also an active educator in US Military history, setting up educational displays from various periods. Rich also enjoyed frontier-era rendezvous reenacting, and many of his fur-trade reenacting items are in this auction as well.
