Description
This extensive collection of 19th-century hard rubber buttons, also known as vulcanite or ebonite, is presented on multiple display boards of varying colors including white, cream, tan, and gold. These items are buttons featuring a diverse range of molded decorative designs such as basketweave textures, geometric patterns, and intricate pictorial motifs including anchors, stars, floral elements, insects, birds, and classical busts. Several specimens are backmarked or accompanied by handwritten cataloging notes identifying manufacturers and patent dates, specifically referencing the Novelty Rubber Co., I.R.C. Co., and Goodyear’s P=T 1851, denoting Charles Goodyear’s vulcanization patent. The buttons are mounted using various methods, with some reverse sides showing wire and safety pin fastenings.
