Description

This antique late 19th-century lithographed tin canister was manufactured by Norton Bros. of Chicago for Choice Improved Mustard. The square-bodied general store tin features orange and black decorative graphics in the Victorian style. The exterior is decorated with ornate borders, an oval vignette of a nautical scene featuring an anchor, and a portrait of a young child in a ruffled collar. The primary label reads Choice Improved Mustard Full Weight. The vessel is topped with an embossed metal screw-top lid featuring the text Unscrew to Left, Self Sealing Can, and multiple patent dates, including March 31, 1868, March 4, 1873, and December 7, 1880. The manufacturer mark Norton Bros. Chicago Makers is present on the side panels and the lid.
