Description
An assortment of decorative sewing buttons mounted on a display card. The collection features a variety of materials including white and golden mother-of-pearl, iridescent abalone, green snail shell, and Pinna shell. Construction techniques include carving, piercing, laser engraving, and wax resist dyeing. Specific specimens include a laser-engraved shell button depicting a deer, which is identified on the reverse label as a sporting button from the collection of Millicent Saffro of Tender Buttons, dated 2011. Other notable items include a button styled after a Chinese Guangxu Tongbao coin, various buttons with inset faceted glass or resin accents, and several pieces featuring floral openwork and geometric forms. The display card is labeled Mixed Shell/MOP and includes handwritten notes referencing Pinna shell and collector Nancy DuBois.
