Description
Pre Spanish American War cabinet card of Hamilton Smith Hawkins. The view was taken by Pach Bro’s 935 Broadway N.Y. around the time that he was Commandant of West Point Academy. The card measures 6 3/8″ x 4 1/8″. Identified as :Hawkins” on the reverse, other views of Hawkings are held at the Library of Congress. Hawkins, a West Point student who never graduated, enlisted on 4/26/1861 as a 2nd Lieut., 6th U.S. Infantry. His regiment fought at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. After the war he remained in the army and fought the Plains Indians during the Indian Wars. He was Commandant of Cadets at West Point from 1888 – 1892. From 1894 to April 1898 he was the commandant of the infantry and cavalry school at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Shortly after the outbreak of the Spanish American War he was appointed Brigadier General and commanded the 1st Brigade of the 1st Division, V Corps. During the Battle of San Juan Hill, July 1, 1898, he was severely wounded near the crest while leading his brigade in the charge up the hill. Promoted to Major July 8, 1898 he returned to the United States and retired from the Army three months later.
