Description

Civil War Confederate 1/4 plate identified tintype of 4th North Carolina Infantry Captain and Assistant Surgeon Jacob M. Hadley, an unidentified Confederate soldier, and five civilians (presumably family members). In this photograph, Hadley is wearing a Confederate officer’s frock coat with black cuffs, collar trim and two rows of gold braid on his sleeves as required for Assistant Surgeons in the 1861 Confederate uniform regulations. He is also wearing a dark sash. Upon removing the image from its gold mat we discovered that the plain background is a photographer’s backdrop. The contrast and clarity of this tintype is exceptional. Hadley is identified from other known views including an image of him In Volume I, page 229 of the 1901 five volume set, Histories of the Several Regiments and Battalions from North Carolina in the Great War 1861-’65. Three other identified views of him can be found on the “Find A Grave” site. The other Confederate soldier in this image is possibly Hadley’s younger brother John Hadley who in 1861 at the age of 18 enlisted in the 5th North Carolina Cavalry and was killed on November 8, 1863 at Stevensburg, Virginia. Jacob Hadley was appointed Assistant Surgeon of the 4th North Carolina Infantry on December 9, 1862. On June 15, 1863 He was placed in charge of Gen. R. S. Ewell’s sick and wounded in Martinsburg, VA . Records indicate that he was captured in July 1863 (exact date unknown). Hadley is included on a list of Confederate medical personnel who were left behind at Gettysburg to tend to Confederate soldiers who were too severely wounded or weak to travel. This list, compiled by Author Tom Elmore, does note that Hadley was captured at Martinsburg. Within a few months, Assistant Surgeon Hadley was paroled. On September 30, 1863, 4th North Carolina Surgeon Dr. John Shaffner noted in his diary, “Asst. Surgeon, (Hadley) visiting the camp of the 4th NC Infantry – on parole from “Yankeedom” .He will probably have a very nice time at home before released or exchanged.”. Hadley returned to the regiment on December 9. 1863. He served with the 4th North Carolina until the end of the war and was present at Appomattox where he was paroled on April 9, 1865.
