Description
Civil War CDV of George J. Stannard as a Brigadier General. This photo measures 4.125″ x 2.5″ and is in excellent condition. Photograph backmarked C. D. Fredericks & Co. Pencil notation on the reverse, “Gen G. J. Stennard”. Stannard, a resident of St. Albans, Vermont, enlisted as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 2nd Vermont Infantry. His successes at the Battle of First Bull Run then at Williamsburg in the Peninsula Campaign let to his commission as Colonel of the 9th Vermont Infantry. During the Maryland Campaign the 9th Vermont was part of the garrison at Harper’s Ferry that was forced to surrender to Stonewall Jackson although Stannard was conspicuous in his defense of Bolivar Heights. After his exchange in January 1863, Stannard was appointed a Brigadier General and given command of the 2nd Vermont Brigade. At Gettysburg, Stannard’s Brigade payed a key role in repulsing Pickett’s Charge on July, 3. Stannard was wounded in the right thigh during this action but stayed on the field. His wound required a lengthy period of recovery and upon his return he was given brigade command in the 18th Corps. He was wounded during the Battle of Cold Harbor. As a division commander, he let the attack on Fort Harrison where he was wounded again, resulting in the amputation of his right arm. He received a brevet promotion to Major General for this action.
