Description
Civil War CDV of West Point Cadet and Civil War officer William Chambers Bartlett who graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1862. This photograph is backmarked Charles D. Fredericks & Co., New York and is identified as Bartlett from his photo in the USMA – U.S. Military Academy 1862 class album. On June 17, 1862, Bartlett was commissioned into the 3rd United States Light Artillery Batteries L & M of the 9th Army Corps. He was brevetted 1st Lieutenant for “gallant and meritorious service” at Antietam and then received a brevet to Captain for action at Campbell’s Station, Tennessee November 16, 1863. He was assigned as aide-de-camp (ADC) to Major General Schofield March 19, 1864 and appointed Captain in the Staff Corps, US Volunteers. He was on the campaign to Atlanta, and received his 3rd brevet, to Major, on September 1, 1864, when he transferred to General Kilpatrick’s staff. On November 17, 1864, he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd North Carolina (Union) Mounted Infantry. He led a brigade in the 23rd Army Corps to March 1865, and his regiment in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee to August 1865. He was given a fourth brevet, to Brigadier General, Volunteers on March 13,1865. He mustered out of the Volunteer service on August 16, 1865.
