Civil War grouping identified to Robert Madge, Co. C, 57th Pennsylvania Volunteers of Mercer County, Pennsylvania. Including in this group are 1.) Several Grand Army of the Republic badges and ribbons, 2.) An inscribed cane presented to Madge on his 50th birthday that reads, “Robert Madge 1836 – 1886 Presented by Relatives”. There is a partial split along the seam of the cane’s handle.   3.) A group of ephemera of war time and postwar documents including discharge, furlough, letters, sergeant promotion document, 1st sergeant promotion document, pension documents and family documents. Madge’s name is listed on the Pennsylvania Gettysburg Monument 57th P.V. panel which indicates that he was present at the battle of Gettysburg. At some point in his service he was captured at Richmond and confined for 76 days. The 57th P.V.V. was assigned to the 3rd Corps & 2nd Corps of the Army of the Potomac. The battles they participated in include:Fair Oaks, Charles City Crossroads, Malvern Hill, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, North Anna River, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg.   Pick up is Sunday, March 29 from 10 am to 4 pm at our gallery in Lancaster, Ohio 43130 or we will provide in-house shipping for this item.
