Description

This is a WWII-era US Army M1939/M1942 pattern enlisted man’s overcoat, also known as a greatcoat. The garment is constructed from heavy-weight olive drab (OD) melton wool. It features a double-breasted front closure with six brown plastic or composition buttons embossed with the Great Seal of the United States. This specific button type was introduced in 1942 to conserve brass for the war effort. The coat includes a large notched collar and two front slash pockets. The back is designed with a fixed half-belt, or martingale, secured by two matching buttons, and a long central vent at the skirt to allow for ease of movement. The interior is partially lined through the shoulders and sleeves with a tan cotton twill fabric. A blue ink stamp reading VBE is visible on the interior lining, likely representing a soldier’s laundry mark or initials. No contractor or size labels are visible in the provided images.
