Description
An early 20th-century American military summer service tunic, likely United States Navy or Marine Corps issue, dating from the Spanish-American War through the pre-World War I era. The garment is constructed from heavyweight khaki cotton twill. It features a standing mandarin collar with a hook-and-eye closure and a front secured by five buttons. The tunic displays characteristic early tailoring with sunburst vertical reinforcing seams radiating from the shoulders to the chest and matching vertical seams on the back. It is equipped with two pleated breast pockets with scalloped flaps, each secured by a single button. Shoulder straps are present and attached with smaller versions of the main buttons. Each sleeve cuff is decorated with four rows of gold-colored silk or rayon braid chevrons arranged in a point-up configuration on a pointed cuff. The tunic is fitted with darkened bronze-finish metal shank buttons. The face of each button depicts an eagle with spread wings perched upon a horizontal fouled anchor, surrounded by a circular border of thirteen five-pointed stars, identifying them as the standard United States Navy pattern. The interior is unlined with a small fabric hanging loop inside the collar. No visible manufacturer labels or stamps are present.
