Description
This is a United States World War I Victory Medal, a military service award established to recognize service in the United States Armed Forces between 1917 and 1918. The bronze medallion features the obverse design by James Earle Fraser, depicting a winged Victory figure holding a sword and shield. The reverse is inscribed THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION and lists the Allied nations around the perimeter, with a central fasces superimposed over a shield bearing the initials US. The medal is suspended from its original silk double-rainbow patterned ribbon. Five bronze battle clasps are attached to the ribbon, identifying the recipient’s participation in major operations: SOMME, OFFENSIVE; CHAMPAGNE-MARNE; ST. MIHIEL; MEUSE-ARGONNE; and DEFENSIVE SECTOR. The rim of the medallion is privately engraved in cursive script with the name Albert V. W. Hamilton. The reverse of the ribbon features the original wrap-around brooch and pin assembly.
