July Military Auction
Lot 24948:
Description
A vintage hand-embroidered military morale patch, identified as theater-made, commonly produced in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War period. The patch features a central skull motif with black embroidered eye sockets and a stylized hornbill bird perched on the crown. The bird is rendered with a tan body, yellow wing detail, a pink head, and a yellow beak. A combat knife with a ribbed green hilt and white embroidered blade is positioned behind a yellow ribbon banner with red borders. The banner contains the embroidered text DEATH BEFORE RE-ENLISTMENT in black block lettering. The construction exhibits characteristic hand-stitching with dense, slightly irregular thread-work typical of regional artisan production. The reverse displays a raw finish with visible thread paths and remnants of stabilization material.
