Description
A standard-issue United States Army Model 1878 pattern canteen. The item consists of a round, double-convex metal body encased in a sewn-on khaki-drab canvas cover. The canvas cover is constructed with hand-stitched seams along the outer edge. The front of the canteen features a black stenciled U.S. in a serif font. The reverse of the canvas displays faint, illegible dark markings that likely represent a soldier’s identification or unit designation. The canteen is fitted with a metal spout and a cork stopper featuring a metal cap and pull-ring. A metal chain attaches the stopper assembly to a wire loop on the spout. Two triangular metal wire loops are positioned on the sides of the canteen to accommodate a shoulder sling. This model was the primary canteen for the US Army from the late Indian Wars through the Spanish-American War and Philippine-American War periods. We do our best to describe all items in the sale, and we definitely take a ton of photos. But, we are not able to guarantee authenticity or era of items in the sale. Pickup is Wednesday, July 15, from Noon to 5 pm at our facility in Lancaster, OH. Alternate pickup day is available by appointment for a $5 fee per lot or we will provide in-house shipping for this item.
