Description
This is an identified United States military officer dress blue tunic, following the M1902 pattern for state volunteer militia and National Guard forces. The garment is constructed of heavy dark blue wool with a standing collar and a front placket featuring a hidden hook-and-eye closure system. The collar, front edge, and rear skirt vents are trimmed with wide forest green mohair braid. The tunic is identified to Lieutenant W. H. Goff Jr. of the 9th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, as evidenced by a handwritten ink inscription on a white cotton tag located inside the pocket and supported by user-provided data. An embroidered tailor label for Fruit J. Clayton of Boston is sewn into the interior collar.
Insignia and rank details include a matching pair of dress shoulder straps featuring light blue felt fields for the Infantry branch, bordered by gold bullion wire with two silver bullion bars indicating the rank of First Lieutenant. The collar features gold-toned metal insignia including crossed rifles with the numeral 9 on the right side and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts state seal on the left. The state seal includes the motto ENSE PETIT PLACIDAM SVB LIBERTATE QVIETEM. A multi-colored ribbon bar is hand-stitched directly to the left breast of the tunic. The interior is fully lined with black silk or satin. We do our best to describe all items in the sale, and we definitely take a ton of photos.
