Description
A French National Order of the Legion of Honor (Legion d’honneur) decoration, specifically the Chevalier (Knight) rank from the Third Republic era. The medal is designed as a five-armed, ten-pointed cross in silver with white enamel, tipped with silver spheres. The arms are joined by a green enameled wreath of oak and laurel leaves. The entire cross is suspended from a smaller green enameled oak and laurel wreath. The obverse features a central gold-colored medallion with the profile of Marianne facing right, encircled by a blue enamel ring inscribed with REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE 1870. The reverse features a central gold-colored medallion with two crossed French tricolor flags in enamel, encircled by a blue enamel ring inscribed with HONNEUR ET PATRIE. The medal is attached to a red silk moire ribbon. The absence of a rosette on the ribbon identifies this as the rank of Chevalier. No official maker hallmarks were identified on the metal components. The interior of the folded ribbon contains handwritten characters in black ink, possibly a name or inventory mark.
