Description
Civil War Matthew Brady albumen photograph of West Point class of 1865 graduate Albert Gallatin Force. The oval albumen measures 5″ x 3.785″ and is mounted to an 8.5″ x 10.25″ cardstock. A gilt border encircles the albumen and includes the photographer imprint “Brady New York”. 1865 was the only year that Matthew Brady was contracted to take West Point Graduate photographs. Force was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st U.S. Cavalry upon his graduation from the U.S. Military Academy. This began a 33 year career in the United States army that culminated in Forse’s death during the Spanish American War at the Battle of San Juan Hill, Cuba on July 1, 1898. Colonel Theodore Roosevelt, commanding the Rough Riders reported, “On the hill-slope immediately around me I had a mixed force composed of members of most cavalry regiments, and a few infantrymen…….At this particular time it was trying for the men, as they were lying flat on their faces, very rarely responding to the bullets, shells, and shrapnel which swept over the hilltop. and which occasionally kill or wounded one of of their number. Major Albert G. Forse, of the First Cavalry, a noted Indian fighter, was killed about this time.” Forse spent much of his career in the military out West. He was engaged in fighting Nez Perces Indians in 1875 and 1877, the Bannock and Piute Indians in 1878 and the Crow Indians in 1887. .
