Description
Post Civil War 1866 – 1869 CDV photograph of Colonel Henry A. Hambright taken between 1866 – 1869 in Jefferson,Texas while commanding the 29th U.S. Infantry. During the Civil War, Hambright served as Colonel of the 79th Pennsylvania Infantry. The photograph offered here is backmarked “Lee Gallery, Jefferson, Texas, by W.W. Sloan”. It is identified in pencil on the back, “Col. Hambright – 29th U. S. Inft.”. The 29th U.S. Infantry was one of three regiments created in July 1866 from the reorganization of the11th U.S. infantry. Since the 29th Infantry was disbanded in 1869, it is possible to conclusively determine the time frame in which this image was taken. Hambright was born and lived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. During the Mexican American War, he served in the 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry. In the 1850s he was Captain of the Jackson Rifles Militia. At the beginning of the Civil War he helped raise the 79th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and served as its Colonel for the entire war although he was seldom in command in 1864 – 1865 due to health issues. The regiment was known as the Lancaster Rifles as it was largely composed of men from Lancaster County. He did command the regiment at Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, and Buzzard’s Roost where he was wounded.
