Description
Civil War trimmed albumen of a Union 1st Lieutenant wearing an unusual “Horse and Rider” belt plate. Originally an oval albumen mounted to thin stock mat that probably measured approx. 8″ x 10″, this image was significantly trimmed to a 4.25″ x 6.375″ rectangular format with a small portion of the original mat still visible. Perhaps done to accommodate a different frame. A photograph of an identical belt plate can be found in the September/October 2004 issue of Military Images where it was suggested that the horse and rider belt late was worn by Rhode Island militia circa 1840 – 1860. The subject’s shoulder strap borders, sword knot and cheeks and table have been artistically tinted. Pick up is Sunday, March 29 from 10 am to 4 pm at our gallery in Lancaster, Ohio 43130 or we will provide in-house shipping for this item.
