Spring Button Auction Day 2
Lot 2940:
Description
This extensive collection of antique and vintage buttons spans the mid-18th century through the early 20th century. The assembly is organized on professionally labeled display boards and informational mounts, categorizing the items by material, era, and historical significance. Featured materials include brass, copper, tombac, bone, horn, porcelain, and various glass types, notably Bohemian charmstring glass. Thematic groupings include Copper Colonials (1770-1800) featuring alpha shanks, Golden Age buttons (1830-1840), Jacksonians, and pieces of political significance referencing the 1834 Whig party. Educational elements are integrated throughout, including historical portraits illustrating contemporary button use, a commercial Duke brand sample card from The State Button Co. of New York, and comparative displays of imitating pairs alongside a section dedicated to fakes, frauds, and reproductions. These items are buttons that represent a curated study of utilitarian and decorative fasteners, including utilitarian china buttons known as calicoes and ringers, and flat steel specimens from circa 1830.
