Description
This extensive collection of buttons is primarily composed of vegetable ivory, also known as tagua nut. The items are organized across numerous display cards and sheets, many of which are categorized according to the National Button Society (NBS) 2002 classification system. The collection includes a wide variety of types such as pictorials, patterns, realistics, and assorted decorative finishes. Technical execution includes carving, piercing, laser-cutting, stenciling, and dyeing in various colors including shades of brown, black, green, and red. Notable specimens include realistic animal forms like dogs and fish, as well as intricate pictorial buttons featuring botanical and scenic motifs. Several cards feature detailed provenance and classification text, with specific attribution to collectors Pat Fields and Bob Benson. The buttons are mounted on labeled paperboard and plastic display sheets.
