The collection demonstrates various decorative techniques including intricate carving, piercing, dyeing, and inlaying with shell or metal. Motifs present across the assortment range from simple geometric and floral patterns to elaborate designs featuring human faces, shells, and animals such as elephants, birds, and lizards. Labeling on the cards provides historical and geographical context, noting modern examples from India dating to the 1950s through 1970s, as well as sections designated for Plain Old Bone and New(er) buttons.
